Scientific Method: Salt Crystal Experiment
Problem/Purpose/Question: To understand the difference between a rock and a mineral.
Hypothesis: We predict that the salt mixture will turn into salt crystals.
Materials: Two plastic spoons, two pieces of duct tape, two magnifying glasses, two wooden mixers, two paper cups, hot water, table salt, rocks, and minerals.
Procedure:
Boil water
Put table salt into water
Fill half in both cups
Pour water into both, each two-thirds of the spoon
Water fills up 2/3 of the spoon's capacity.
Let mixture sit for one day
Examine spoon the next day
Data/Observation: The salt crystals were in the spoon.
How the salt the finished experiment looks like.
Though they were not a perfect square, they resembled salt crystals.
CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning): Claim: The salt was not visible in the mixture, but was in it. Evidence: The salt dissolved into the water, making a mixture. Reasoning: The salt dissolved into the water, so it could not become into a different substance. This was visible through the salt crystals, because the water evaporated and the salt was reformed and left behind.
